Hummingbird in Flight

Turned from a beautiful piece of quilted Norway Maple wood (note the chatoyance), and then painstakingly hand pierced 12 hummingbirds into the rim of this platter using an air powered 400,000 rpm drill  (think dentist drill).

This piece was inspired by watching our numerous Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds as they chased others away from their clean, naturally sweetened filtered water supply! This piece measures 10" in diameter and stands 1.5" tall.  There are 12 silhouettes, each painted green inside, with the 'ruby colored throat' indicative of the male in this species, to create the lifelike effect. Finished with several coats of Danish oil and then waxed to a low satin shine.
